Central Deserts Art Safari - Alice Springs to remote communities & MacDonnell Ranges July 28 - August 5, 2008 - Central Desert Art Safari - Alice Springs to remote communities & MacDonnell Ranges - includes Yuendumu, Papunya, Haasts Bluff, Hermannsburg, Palm Valley, Gosse Bluff, Kings Canyon, Uluru - includes Tanami Track & Tillmouth Well- Outback Art, Yuendumu - same as detailed below. Tour Code ART9 Day 1 - Depart Alice Springs for Tanami Track at 1pm (we meet 1pm flight from Sydney or other ports). A three hour journey heads you toward some of the remotest country in Australia. Enjoy the rich collection of Aboriginal art available here at Tillmouth Wells - including from Mt Allan, Papunya, Yuendumu. Overnight Tillmouth Wells camp roadhouse & campground. Day 2 - Visit the world famous Warlukurlangu artists at Yuendumu, and meet the artists at work. You can buy their art directly from source. After a good connection with the locals. Time permitting, visits Mt Allan & Mt Wedge art centres. Back to our camp at Tillmouth Wells. Day 3 - Head to Papunya community art centre and meet the artists here. Learn about this special local techniques. Nearby is the spectacular Haasts Bluff crater. Overnight camp in this extraordinary remote and creative landscape. Day 4 - Visit Redbank Gorge and Ormiston Gorge for walks and while away time before overnight camp at Glen Helen gorge. See sweeping views from Tyler's Pass to view one of the highest peaks in the region, Mt Sonder. Overnight Glen Helen gorge. Day 5 - Travel via spectacular scenery of the Western MacDonnell's for a walk in Gosse Bluff meteorite crater. We visit Albert Namatjira's house near Hermannsburg, and taste his early life. Visit the famous Lutheran Hermannsburg Mission and art school were Namatjira first learnt to paint - more art treats here and learn of the fascinating history of Hermannsburg and the early Aboriginal art school. Afternoon we head up the ancient Finke River to Palm Valley where Albert Namatjira's paintings were so inspired, before a relaxing sunset and overnight camp. Day 6 - Enjoy a morning walk in the eerie and ancient Palm Valley, viewing unique vegetation and landforms only seen here. After lunch we take the 4WD Mereenie Loop track for Kings Canyon area through this spectacular Central Deserts landscape via the Gardiner Range, the Camels Hump and Katapata Pass. Overnight Kings Canyon Day 7 - Experience the mighty Kings Canyon with a 3 hour walk, we visit the “Garden of Eden”, and the spectacular north and south walls. Alternatively choose the easier valley walk. Time permitting we will check out other local walks or simply relax by the pool. Overnight Kings Canyon. Day 8 - Back near civilization, we head for Uluru, via Curtin Springs. After lunch at Yulara we have time for Uluru walks and sunset viewing. Day 9 - Sunrise at Uluru - then free time for walks and wilderness. Tour ends after breakfast or extend with an optional Kata Tjuta walk & tour (tour from $ 150).
