Day 1
– Overland to Kununurra departing from Darwin at 715 am (fly to
Kununurra options available). Travel via the Stuart Highway to Pine
Creek. Then on to Katherine, the NT’s 3rd largest town and lunch break.
Now heading west on the Victoria Highway (part of the Savannah Way) we
pass through rich cattle country and spectacular rugged mountain
landscapes through Gregory National Park to Victoria River and Timber
Creek. Enjoy views of the Stokes Range. We travel to cross the NT/WA
state border and arrive in Kununurra for overnight.

Day 2 –  Time to look
around Kununurra, and check out the fabulous art galleries displaying
local works. Depart for the Bungle Bungles mid morning to travel via
picturesque mountain landscapes via Doon Doon and Turkey Creek (Warmun)
before the adventurous drive via creek crossings and narrow tracks to
the Bungle Bungles (Purnululu National Park).
Overnight camp in this magical environment.

Day 3 – Marvel at this high
energy amazing orange and black striped beehive landscape formed by
giant river systems. Walk the spectacular Cathedral Cave, Piccanninny
Creek and after lunch a walk in Echidna Gorge. Optional scenic
helicopter flight available. Sunset viewing over this stunning
landscape before a hearty meal and overnight camp in the Bungle
Bungles.

Day 4 – We farewell the Bungle
Bungles today and stop at Turkey Creek and the Warmun art centre – home
of Rover Thomas & many other famous Aboriginal artists. Here you
can meet the artists and find some bargain art. After lunch, we head
for El Questro, a Million acres of spectacular Kimberley scenery,
rivers and gorges. Its here that the movie Australia was filmed,
nestled under the Cockburn Ranges. Late afternoon we relax by the river
at our El Questro camp.

Day 5 – This morning soak up
the relaxing Zebedee hot springs, before exploring more of the El
Questro treats including El Questro and Moonshine Gorges, a cruise on
Chamberlain Gorge and Branco’s Lookout over the Pentecost River.
Overnight at El Questro.

Day 6 – Emma Gorge calls this
morning for a walk to this rainforest surrounded sacred waterhole. We
then visit Parry Lagoon and witness extraordinary wetland bird life
before the spectacular views from 5 Rivers Lookout (rivers include the
Durack, King, Pentecost, Forrest and Ord). We skirt the east side of
the Cockburn Range and visit Diggers Rest – the home of the Australia
movie film set and “Faraway Downs”. Then back on the scenic and
spectacular Gibb River Road via Cockburn Range, to cross the mighty
Pentecost River, with the afternoon sun highlighting the Cockburn
Range. Overnight hospitality at Home Valley Station.

Day 7 – After a hearty
breakfast and lookout over the ranges and Pentecost River from a high
vantage point, we set forth on the Gibb River Rd. Enjoy a morning tea
at a bird lovers billabong. We take a right turn at the Kulumburu Rd,
and visit the famous working cattle station, Drysdale River Station.
After lunch travel through spectacular vegetation including cycads,
pandanas palms and rainforests and ford the King Edward River before
our overnight camp on Mitchell Plateau.

Day 8 – Today we are treated
with the thrill of a spectacular helicopter ride over the Mitchells
Falls for a once in a lifetime view of this vast landscape. Options
also available for extended flights to coastal areas. From Falls base
we have a couple of hours to relax and swim in these pristine,
energised waters. From the falls we do the return walk via more
spectacular swimming pools and waterfalls. View Bradshaw (Gion Gion)
rock art sites and swim in these beautiful clear fresh waters. This is
one of the most remote areas of Australia. Overnight on Mitchell
Plateau at our King Edward River camp.

Day 9 – Explore the river rock
and waterfalls here before we visit more rock art and savour this lush
creative environment. Back down the Gibb River Rd we stop at the Gibb
River – a great opportunity for bird watching or just enjoying the
water and pandanas palms. We detour a few kilometres to view Barnett
River Gorge before we meet some of the local Ngarinyin Aboriginal
people. We’ll share a meal together, and hear insights into the
dreamtime and local culture. We visit Mt Barnett Roadhouse and enjoy
more rock art and stories and have time to relax or be creative by the
beautiful swimming hole at our campsite at Manning Gorge.

Day 10 – Relax this morning
before a walk to Manning Gorge waterfalls for a swim and bask in this
pristine environment. Return to camp for meal and evening campfire.

Day 11 – First stop this
morning, we take a short walk off the road to Galvans Gorge for good
swimming and photos too! We travel on to Adcock Gorge for morning tea,
then arrive at Imitji Aboriginal community for lunch, before an
afternoon walk in Windjana Gorge with the abundant
wildlife and numerous freshwater crocodiles in this eerie, ancient
seabed environment. Overnight Windjana Gorge.

Day 12 – Nearby is Tunnel
Creek
, where we walk through this underground river system to
a waterhole and Aboriginal rock art. Our day includes a tasty picnic
lunch and optional swim in the waterhole before we call in to the new
Mowanjum Art Centre (meet the artists, learn and buy from source) at
the Mowanjum Aboriginal Community. We visit Derby and
the wharf with the 30ft (10 m) tides on the southern shores of King
Sound. We see some of the biggest and oldest Boabs in the Kimberley in
this area, including the infamous Prison Tree near Derby.
The Kimberley area is famous for cattle and near here is claimed the
worlds largest cattle drinking trough.
 

This years Mowanjum Festival is
tonight and will celebrate the 53rd Anniversary of the Mowanjum
community
It will showcase the musical talent of the region and an
opportunity to experience the magnificent corroborees of the Ngarinyin,
Worrorra and Wunambal people!  You can immerse yourself in
Aboriginal culture at the new Wandjina Art Centre and
festival site, before we visit the evenings events. Alternatively a
flight to the Horizontal Waterfalls may be possible.
Enjoy the festival in the evening before overnight in Derby.

Day 13 – Early start (8 am)
for Broome arriving approximately 1030 am to enjoy a introductory
tour of Broome
, and optional swim in the Indian Ocean, art
galleries, an optional camel ride or just getting into some serious
shopping or Broome cafe culture. We recommend a scenic flight to the
Horizontal Waterfalls or visit a Pearl farm, or simply shop or relax in
Broome’s balmy climate.  You can store your gear with us to enjoy
the day before flights home or alternate destinations or consider
travelling with us to Alice Springs via the Tanami Track, Wolfe Creek
Crater and art centres. Tour ends at 12 noon, prior to lunch. Airport
transfer available if required.
