Tour itinerary – Kimberley Broome to Broome Mitchell Falls Accommodated Tour 11 Days via Bungle Bungles, El Questro – Broome to Broome – Darwin & Kununurra link options available)
Day 1 – Broome – Derby – Tunnel Creek – Windjana Gorge
Departs Broome 730 am. Visit the famous prison Boab tree, and then Derby highlights including the Derby wharf (30 ft tides!) on King Sound, the worlds longest cattle drinking trough, the new Mowanjum Art Centre (meet the artists, learn and buy from source) at Mowanjum Aboriginal Community. Depart from Derby for mystical Windjana Gorge and a short hop further to Tunnel Creek. We walk through this 600m cave river system to a special waterhole. After an optional swim, return to Windjana Gorge for a sunset gorge walk at this special creation “waterhole”. Meet the local freshwater crocodiles and exotic bird life (maybe even a rare Gouldian Finch) in this eerie, ancient seabed environment. Day 2 – We travel the Gibb River Rd visiting Lennard River, and through the Napier Range at Queen Victoria Pass. We traverse the King Leopold Ranges & Conservation Park (great views) via Inglis Gap and visit Imitji store and Aboriginal community artworks before the scenic drive through spectacular Kimberley ranges and cattle country. Time for a diversion now and a walk and swim at Galvans Gorge before refuelling at Mt Barnett and checking out the swimming hole at Manning River gorge. Day 3 – There is lots of rock art in this area, and we visit 3 major majestic Bradshaw / Gwion and powerful Wandjina Aboriginal rock art sites plus waterhole with optional swim available. We enoy a full day rock art tour with local Aboriginal guides and our tour includes an introduction to cattle station life and issues and some brilliant nature & bush tucker stops too. Day 4 – After a tasty breakfast we return to the Gibb River Rd, turn off up the Kalumburu Road, cross the Gibb River and arrive at Drysdale River Station for a break. We travel north through spectacular vegetation including cycads, pandanas palms and rainforests and ford the King Edward River before our overnight on Mitchell Plateau. Here we enjoy the waterfalls, swim and visit two vast galleries of Aboriginal rock art including Wandjina & Bradshaw / Gwion Gwion rock art. Day 5 – Today we traverse the Mitchell Plateau to Mitchell Falls and do the mid to easy 2 hour downhill walk via spectacular swimming pools and waterfalls. View several large galleries and rock art sites with Wandjina and Bradshaw / Gwion Gwion rock art sites (including Thylacine / Tasmanian Tiger rock art ) and swim in these beautiful clear fresh waters. This is one of the most remote areas of Australia. At Mitchell Falls base we have a couple of hours to relax and swim in these pristine, energised waters. We take the easy way out with the thrill of a spectacular helicopter flight ride over the Mitchell Falls & Merton Falls for a once in a lifetime view of this vast landscape and coastline. Day 6 – Leaving the Mitchell Plateau, we travel to the Gibb River Rd, and enroute lunch at a peaceful waterhole, and view another rock art gallery. We travel country where some of the Australia The Movie scenes were filmed, and overnight at Home Valley Station on the banks of the Pentecost River adjacent the spectacular Cockburn Range. BLD
Day 7 – This morning we cross the Pentecost River and in El Questro enjoy a walk this morning in Amelia or Emma Gorge or an alternative El Questro Gorge. Also relax and soak up the healing waters of Zebedee hot springs, before exploring more of the El Questro treats including a Chamberlain Gorge river cruise and views of El Questro and the Chamberlain River & Pentecost Rivers from Pigeon Lookout. Relax at El Questro with dinner in their stylish restaurant. (This dinner own expense). BL
Day 8 – After a tasty breakfast and optional morning gorge walk, we travel on to Wyndham, Western Australia’s most northerly town and awe at the landscape from Five Rivers Lookout, with views over the spectacular river systems and wetland flood plains feeding Cambridge Gulf. We visit the wetlands of Parry’s Lagoon, a Ramsar listed site and haven for wetland birds from afar. The bird life at Parry Lagoon is some of the richest in the Kimberley, with Brolgas, Jabiru, Whistling Ducks, Egrets, waders, and many more. We head south down the Great Northern Highway / Savannah Way to enter the Bungle Bungles and Purnululu National Park. Enjoy a walk overnight at the Bungle Bungles Wildrness Lodge – optional accommodation to ensuite tents available – Optional Lake Argyle sunset cruise, and next day fly in to Bungle Bungles – add approx $990 per person – please ask. Day 9 – Today we drive amongst the Bee Hive domes as we enter the Bungle Bungles in Purnululu National Park to marvel at this high energy amazing orange and black striped beehive landscape formed by giant river systems. Walk the spectacular Cathedral Gorge and Piccaninny Creek. After lunch a walk in Echidna Gorge. Optional scenic helicopter flights also available approx $280 for 18 minutes – fantastic. Day 10 – After breakfast Halls Creek is next with its gold mining history including the tale of Russian Jack, before the local Aboriginal Art Centre. This is Mesa country with impressive views over the vast grassland plains, we pass the tanami Track to Wolffe Creek crater and the “shortcut” to Alice Springs. Take a break at the scenic and bird lovers Marys Pool on the Mary River. We continue westward on the Savannah Way then lunch at the picturesque Ngumban Cliffs.
An optional 2 hour Aboriginal guided cultural experience at Mimbi Caves (subject to availability) can be included if pre-arranged – requires rocky walk in dark cave. Heading west we arrive at Fitzroy Crossing which is an education and supply centre for surrounding cattle stations and Aboriginal communities. Overnight Fitzroy River Lodge BLD
Day 11 – After breakfast enjoy a relaxing Darngku Geike Gorge river cruise on the vast Fitzroy River, and marvel at the high cliffs, annual flood records, stunning wildlife and river tales from our knowledgeable local guide. There is time to check out the local Aboriginal Art Centre and take a look around Fitzroy Crossing which is an education and supply centre for surrounding cattle stations and Aboriginal communities.
After a morning cuppa, our journey continues to Broome, arriving in time to view a beautiful sunset at Cable Beach. Tour completes after tasty treats at the Cable Beach Club Resort, overlooking the stunning Cable Beach and delivery to your accommodation. BLD Accommodation own arrangements.
