Virgin Australia Turbocharges into Alice Springs Flights
19 June 2018
Chief Minister Michael Gunner today welcomed Virgin Australia’s inaugural flight between Brisbane and Alice Springs, increasing competition and connectivity between the two regions and bringing more tourists into Central Australia.
The new service is big win for the Territory Government’s $103 million Turbocharging Tourism stimulus package, where $10.85 million has been invested into cooperative marketing with airlines and other partners to drive visitation and support sustainable airline services.
“More tourists means more local jobs and more money into Territorians’ pockets – this new route will help deliver that,” Mr Gunner said.
“Today’s flight brings with it important increased connectivity to and from Australia’s heartland.”
The Virgin Australia flight, operated by its partner Alliance Airlines, departed Brisbane at 10:15am and touched down in Alice Springs to a ceremonious water-cannon salute this afternoon.
NT Airports CEO, Ian Kew joined the Chief Minister to welcome Virgin Australia General Manager of Network Management, Hope Antzoulatos, as well as trade partners, media, guests and passengers of Virgin Australia.
“Competition has now entered the Alice Springs – Brisbane route, offering competitive fares and creating choice for residents and businesses in both cities,” said Mr Kew.
“The new Virgin Australia service adds around 55% more seats to the route over the coming 12 months, and we’re confident we will see this grow in the future if we all embrace and use this new service offered by Virgin Australia.”
Virgin Australia General Manager Network Management, Hope Antzoulatos said Virgin Australia is thrilled to be launching services between Brisbane and Alice Springs today.
“These services will not only strengthen our domestic network offering and increase competition on this route, they will also provide better connectivity to international destinations,” Ms Antzoulatos said.
“We are always looking for opportunities to improve our network and these services between Brisbane and Alice Springs will provide flexible travel options. We look forward to welcoming guests on board and we are very proud to be operating in this important area of Central Australia.”
The Virgin Australia twice-weekly service will operate on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s on-board Alliance Airlines’ Fokker 100 and 70 jets. To book, visit www.virginaustralia.com.

Discover the outback in a 4×4 guided tour and go beyond the beaten track, as well as visit some of Central Australia’s most recognised Aboriginal art centres – Ikuntji, Warlukurlangu, Papunya, Haasts Bluff and Amata, Fregon, and Iwantja.
You’re sure to make some great friends on this remote outback experience on these Aboriginal Art Tours March 2018 as you get to enjoy the stunning scenery, the vast stillness of the outback and its great pleasures with fellow Aboriginal art enthusiasts.
Your guides, who have worked with Australian Aboriginal Elders and communities for more than 20 years, will share their knowledge of Aboriginal Culture and spirituality of the land.
Kings Canyon on Aboriginal Art Tours March 2018
You will visit the Devils Marbles, a beautiful Australian place, rich in history. Then onto the area of Utopia, known for its famous artists, in particular, the Petyarre sisters. Further along, and up the famous Tanami Track, you will stop at Tillmouth Well, known as the ‘Oasis of the Tanami’. All this and more on these Aboriginal Art Tours March 2018.
You’ll visit several renowned Aboriginal art centres on this tour
Right at the heart of Australia’s Red Centre is the spectacular Kings Canyon. Here you’ll walk among layers of sandstone and shale soaring 270 metres above sea level, and at its base is a lush flora, fed from the natural rock pools, known as the ‘Garden of Eden’.
At Cooper Pedy you’ll have the chance to view more Aboriginal artworks as well as the town’s underground museums and displays, which include opalized marine life and plesiosaurs – a reminder that the Central Australian region was once at the bottom of an ocean
Night in this vast country, still and soundless (c Russell Tunny)
Lake Eyre, a salt lake so vast it’s catchment area crosses over three state borders, is at the lowest point in Australia (49ft below sea level). It’s on the cards, if the Lake’s flooding, that you’ll also have the chance of taking a flight to view the wonder of it coming to life. (So remember to bring a black shirt with you to wear to reduce any reflection on aircraft windows for better photos.)
Then experience the famous Oodnadatta Track and the beginning of the 517km Birdsville Track as you arrive in Marree, a small town home to the Dieri Aboriginal people, which lies at the junction.
Down the Stuart Highway, alongside the path of the famous Ghan, you will drive through Port Augusta to end this most memorable trip in Adelaide.
Devils Marble near Utopia region
