Springs, Katherine, Kakadu to Darwin 2008
Uluru or Alice Springs to Kakadu
& Darwin via Devils Marbles, Mataranka, Katherine Gorge
9 Days/8 Nights – From Uluru or Alice Springs to DarwinAsk about
options to arrive Uluru 8 August or Alice Springs 9 August.
Day 1 – We meet lunchtime flights from
capital cities and settle you into camp. Base walks and sunset and
ceremony at Uluru.
Day 2 – After hearty breakfast and Uluru
sunrise, depart from Uluru approx 12pm Saturday. Visit Curtin
Springs, Mt Connor lookout and Mt Ebenezer Art store for
some appealing Aboriginal art bargains. Enjoy a walk at the
energetic Henley Meteorite Craters before arriving Alice
Springs for a meal on the town, and overnight. If joining us in
Alice, meet approximately 6pm Ask about lots to see and do around town
before a tasty dinner and to settle into camp.
Day 3 – Travel via Wycliffe
Wells, Barrow Creek, the old Overland telegraph stations, Mt
Stirling and Ti-tree are significant landmarks before we overnight
at the Devils Marbles – great photo opportunities at sunset.
The day includes theRed Sands Gallery one of the best in Central
Australia featuring artwork from the renowned Utopia region to
the east.
Day 4 – Great early morning photo
opportunities with the Devils Marbles, a highlight of this
section, so we spend some time here amongst these amazing giant
boulders. Aboriginal legend refers to these precariously balanced
boulders as the “Eggs of the Rainbow Serpent”. Check out and
stock up in Tennant Creek. We stop at Three Ways where
the road from Mt Isa and Townsville join the Stuart Highway.
Here we see the John Flynn memorial (father of the Royal
Flying Doctor Service). We cross the Ashburton and Whittington
Ranges as we travel via famous outback town of Renner Springs, Lake
Woods, Newcastle waters, Daly Water to Mataranka for a welcome hot
springs relax and overnight.
Day 5 – After a relaxing walk and swim,
we head for Nitmiluk National Park, at Katherine Gorge – relax
on an Aboriginal guided gorge cruise. A fabulous introduction
to this spectacular and historic area. Enjoy an afternoon gorge walk
and relaxing by the mighty river. Overnight Katherine Gorge.
Day 6 – Short travel to Kakadu National
Park and Jim Jim Falls and spectacular walk by the falls. Afternoon
just relax or explore or choose an optional scenic flight over
the wetlands Overnight Cooinda.
Day 7 – Board the early boat on the Yellow
Waters to cruise amongst extraordinary birdlife and crocodiles
in this World Heritage listed wetlands. Visit Aboriginal
Cultural Centre and Bowali Visitor Centre. Later,
experience the stunning Nourlangie Rock walk and sunset at Ubirr
Rock. Dinner and Overnight Cooinda in Kakadu.
Day 8 – Visit the Window on the
Wetlands viewing area a tranquil area that supports abundant bird
life. Travel via Humpty Doo and Fogg Dam Possible viewing
and/or visit to site of Ranger Uranium Mine which is located
within the World Heritage National Park near Jabiru. Arrive Darwin
in afternoon for Telstra Art awards and overnight.
Day 9 – Tour ends after breakfast or
optional overnight with us or travel on via Bungle Bungles, Mitchell
Falls & El Questro to Broome.
Includes small group modern 4 wheel drive vehicles, camping gear, fees,
side trips, all meals. Five percent of cost supports Aboriginal
community and nature re-creation projects. |
