Day 1
– From Adelaide
city or airport travel via spectacular rural
then mountain scenery by the FlindersRanges. Travel
via the rich wine producing region of the Clare Valley ((wine
tasting option) and through the rich countryside of rural South Australia.
Enjoy picturesque scenery, and rural town stops with lunch and a
morning and afternoon teas. We cross the Goyder Line, view the Elder & Heyson Ranges, Wilpena Pound & LakeTorrens and visit the
historic and award winning Prairie Hotel at Parachilna
with great outback art before arrival at our cosy overnight stop at
Copley. Dinner at the historic 1880’s Leigh Creek Hotel in Copley

Day 2 – Just up the road is Marree where we check
out the ancient Islamic mosque, Old Ghan
railway history and Lake Eyre Yacht Club.
From Marree we take a 1 1/2 hour scenic flight over Lake Eyre. (Optional 2.5 hour flight
available). We visit the shores of Lake Eyre at MadiganGulf
where Donald Campbell set the land speed record In 1963. The flight includes viewing CooperCreek,
Warburton Groove (the major inflows), ElliotPrice ConservationPark,
Campbell Point, Jackboot, Halligan & BeltBays,
Lake Eyre South,
major islands & landmarks. Learn of the Marree Man giant sculpture.
The flight gives you a great perspective of the region we are about to
travel up the Birdsville Track.
We visit a wetlands by Muloorina Station, a favourite spot for
birds (including brolgas) and birdwatchers, and connect with the wonder
of the bird and plant life revitalised by recent flooding rains.

or around the campfire.
Day 3 – Depart
Marree and today we pass through various terrain including harsh red
stones of the SturtStonyDesert
to the yellow dunes of the Natterannie Sandhills as we head north to
Birdsville. We pass ruins of old sheep and cattle stations, and
currently operating stations. Just north of the Dog Fence
(5,600 km long) are the hot springs of
ClaytonCreek,
near Clayton Station. Another 30 km on is Dulkaninna Station,
these names made famous in the Tom Kruse film “The
Outback Mailman.” We arrive at the
CooperCreek
crossing, which depending on water levels may be the punt (Cooper
Creek Ferry) or a water crossing (1.5 km wide in flood time) or a dry
road. We spend time here birdspotting and later at Mungeranie
Wetlands where we overnight on the Birdsville Track
at the MungerannieHotel. Travellers willing, some time in the hot
spa adjacent the wetlands might be in order. BLD

Day
4 – For the keen birdies, there’s
an early start and easy walk and more time here birdspotting at Mungeranie Wetlands.
We head off south to the Cooper Creek wetlands on the Birdsville Track
on our way through the Brachina & Bunyeroo Gorges (lookout
for the endangered and very pretty Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby)
to Wilpena Pound . We visit the Old Ghan ghost town of
Farina, view the giant Leigh Creek coal mine,
the fascinating and colourful Ochre Pits via
crossinthe through the Heyson & ABC Ranges on a Time
Travellers journey on the ancient Geological Trail through
millions of years of rock strata whose upheavel formed this amazing
landscape. Arrive at our comfy Wilpena Pound Resort accommodation for 2
nights. BLD
Day 5 – Numerous
walks are available from the resort, including a 2 hour walk in this
powerful landscape into Wilpena Pound Itself. Alternatively climb the
lookout to Ohlson Bagge the pound. An optional and
spectacular (the highlight of the region) flight over the pound is
available. In the afternoon we take a 4WD track to view the Aboriginal
rock art of Sacred Canyon and time permitting other
hghlights of the area. Overnight Wilpena Pound. BLD
Day 6 – We enjoy the abundant wildlife and impressive RIver Red Gums around the
Pound before we depart to visit Hawker and the
impressive Kanyaka Station & stone woolshed ruins
as we follow the Old Ghan Railway Line via Quorn,
through the Pitchi Ritchi Pass and the breathtaking
view of Spencers Gulf & Port Augusta to arrive
Adelaide around 6pm, delivered to your accommodation or airport
