The Tanami Track is one of Australia’s most remote outback routes – connecting 1/2 the country, crossing 2 states, NT to WA – from the Red Centre to the Indian Ocean.

The Tanami Track is a major songline connecting country through remote communities and Aboriginal art centres including Yuendumu, Tanami Hills, The Granites, Rabbit Flat, Balgo and the beautiful Balgo Hills, spectacular Wolfe Creek Crater (the worlds second largest meteorite crater where the rainbow serpent entered the Earth) to Halls Creek and more art communities to Fitzroy Crossing, Geike Gorge to Broome.

Day 1 – Overland to Kununurra departing from Darwin at 700 am (fly to Kununurra options available). Travel via the Stuart Highway via Adelaide River, and Katherine, the NT’s 3rd largest town (with time for a dip in the natural springs). We turn west on the Victoria Highway (part of the Savannah Way) and pass through rich cattle country and spectacular rugged mountain landscapes through Gregory National Park to Victoria River and Timber Creek. Here we overnight in a relaxing grassy campground. Enjoy views of the Stokes Range.

 

Day 2 –  We ascend the local range to view the Gregory National Park and scenes of the mighty Victoria River. We cross the NT/WA state border and arrive in Kununurra for fresh supplies from the Ord Rriver scheme. There is time to look around Kununurra, and check out the fabulous art galleries displaying local works. Depart for El Questro with views of the spectacular Cockburn Range, as featured in the Australia Movie. Enjoy a walk in El Questro Gorge  before settling in for the night beside the river (and freshwater swimming hole) at El Questro Station. Dinner at restaurant .Day 3 – El Questro is a million acres of spectacular Kimberley scenery, rivers and gorges. Its here that the movie Australiawas filmed, nestled under the Cockburn Ranges. This morning soak up the relaxing Zebedee hot springs, before we depart for the Bungle Bungles travelling via Doon Doon & viewing spectacular mountain landscapes. We stop at Turkey Creek and the Warnum art centre – where Rover Thomas and many other famous Aboriginal artists emerged.  Here you can view the latest works, meet the artists and find some bargain art. After Turkey Creek, we head for our camp in the stunning landscape of the Bungle Bungles (Purnululu National Park).Day 4 – Today we marvel at this high energy amazing orange and black striped beehive landscape formed by giant river systems. Walk the spectacular Cathedral Cave and Piccanninny Creek and after lunch a walk in Echidna Gorge. Optionalscenic helicopter flight available.  Enjoy sunset viewing from local lookout over this stunning landscape before a hearty meal and overnight camp in the Bungle Bungles. Day 5 – We farewell the Bungle Bungles today and travel south to Halls Creek – viewing the Great China Wall.  We stock up on fuel and supplies here and join the Tanami Track for our first night in the Tanami Desert at Wolfe Creek Crater.

Day 6 – A chance this morning for stunning photos and memories at sunrise of Wolfe Creek Crater, the worlds second largest meteorite crater. Local stories say this is where the rainbow serpent entered the Earth. You can take a walk in the crater or enjoy the view from the crater rim. After a healthy breakfast we take the Tanami Track to Billiluna Aboriginal community on the edge of the Canning Stock Route, before visiting the Balgo Art centre for some wonderful unique art styles and bargains from the local artists. late afternoon we arrive at Rabbit Flat for a welcome shower and overnight camp in the real no-where. Day 7 Travel today takes us by the by the great Tanami and Granites gold mines, and old abandoned wells from gold rush & cattle droving days. These are some of the remotest parts of Australia – a great place to reflect on our existence and experience the vastness and vitality of life – even in the desert. After lunch at Rena Springs we’re ready for more art bargains from the Warlukurlangu artists at Yuendumu, and a look around at this large and unique outback community.

Onwards to Tillmouth Wells, and a wide range of well priced art is available here from surrounding communities including Mt Allan, Papunya, Yuendumu. We may even meet some of the artists with their special offers. Late morning we head for Alice Springs, arriving in the afternoon in time to see the sights of Alice. Tour completes – accommodation own arrangements for overnight Alice Springs BL

Alice Springs – Now in the big smoke, you can explore the Araluen Art centre or other fabulous galleries of Alice Springs, or other sites such as Royal Flying Doctor Service, School of the Air, historic Overland Telegraph Station, all with the backdrop of the mighty MacDonnell Ranges – or just soak up this special atmosphere.
