A God forsaken country of saltbush, rock and sand,
A climate so forbidding it crushed hopes both small and grand,
Farina Old Ghan town near Lake Eyre
At Farina, an old railway town, the history’s written there,
Stone buildings all collapsing as witness to despair.
But in the 1880’s our pioneers made a stand
and through strength and perseverance they used the rock and sand
To build a strong community that they could call their own.
And set up schools and hospitals but still the seeds were sown.
For sometimes this is not enough to save a little town
And closure of the Ghan was enough to shut it down.
And yet to recent visitors the charm is still on view
And a group of volunteers is restoring it anew.
They aim to keep the spirit of the pioneer’s half mast
And so preserve our history and connection to the past
The birds are excited and its a fantastic time to visit now

Big new rain falls in March have flooded regions around Lake Eyre & will revitalize wildlife again !!
Marree, 100 km from Lake Eyre received 8 inches (200mm), and up the Birdsville Track 12 inches (300 mm) of rain fell in a few days. New rains in western catchments of the Neales River NT & Diamantina River QLD catchments. Lake Eyre South is nearly full (at 2m) and Madigan Gulf is expected to reach 500 mm, with Halligan Bay expected to reach 1.8 m.

* March 23-25 & 26-28 – LAKE EYRE TOURS & FLIGHTS – the region is NOW flooding again with 19 year old rainfall records broken in the Cooper Creek catchment & 12 inches of rain on the Birdsville Track last week. These rains will keep the Cooper Creek wetlands lush.
